Tracheostomy and Ventilator Patient Care in Bangalore
SENSE Health admits patients with a tracheostomy, including patients on a ventilator, for care and rehabilitation, with a dedicated respiratory therapist available 24/7 to look after the tube, the airway and breathing. Our on-site doctors and 24/7 emergency response team, backed by Cloudphysician's tele-ICU intensivists, are in the building around the clock.
So a tracheostomy does not have to mean waiting in an acute hospital, or managing suctioning at home alone, before rehabilitation can begin.
Why a 24/7 Respiratory Therapist Matters
A tracheostomy is a breathing tube placed through the front of the neck, often after a long time on a ventilator, a severe stroke or brain injury, Guillain-Barré syndrome, or a high spinal cord injury. It needs care around the clock: secretions build up and must be suctioned, the air must be humidified, the stoma and dressing kept clean, and the tube checked so it does not block or slip out. Problems do not keep office hours; a blocked tube at 3 AM needs a trained person at the bedside within moments.
That is why many rehabilitation centres cannot admit tracheostomy patients, and why families are often asked to wait in an acute hospital or learn to manage the tube at home. At SENSE Health, a respiratory therapist dedicated to tracheostomy and ventilator patients is available 24/7, with our doctors and 24/7 emergency response team in the building.
What Tracheostomy Care Involves
Clearing secretions from the tube and airway whenever needed, day and night.
Keeping inhaled air moist so secretions stay thin and the tube does not block.
Cleaning the tube and the skin around it, changing dressings and checking ties.
Watching oxygen levels, breathing effort and secretions, with Smart ICU monitoring for fragile patients.
Respiratory therapy and chest physiotherapy, both included in the inpatient packages, to keep the airway clear and help move secretions.
Assessment by speech and swallow therapists (charged per session) on whether eating and speaking can be worked towards.

Who We Look After
We admit patients with a tracheostomy and patients on ventilator support. Ventilator, oxygen and ICU/HDU care are charged separately when clinically needed; respiratory therapy is included in the inpatient packages.
Rehabilitation continues alongside tracheostomy care: physiotherapy, gait and hand therapy and the rest of the plan agreed at assessment. See stroke rehabilitation and neuro rehabilitation.
What an Inpatient Stay Includes
Before admission, we go through a written package sheet with you that lists what is included, what is charged separately and the payment terms. You sign it only once it has been explained. Inpatient packages are available in twin-sharing or single rooms; our team recommends one based on the medical and breathing support needed, how much help the person needs and their goals.
Included in both packages
- Bed, attender stay and patient meals (diet plan included)
- Duty doctor consultation, 24/7 nursing and 24/7 caregivers
- Respiratory therapy (RT care), PEG-tube and catheter care
- Daily physiotherapy (one session a day in Essential, two in Advanced)
- Gait training: manual, parallel bars, tilt table and body-weight-support (unweighing) system
- Electrotherapy: TENS, NMES, IFT and therapeutic ultrasound
- Strength training, manual therapy and chest physiotherapy
- Robotic glove and advanced hand therapy; red and infrared light therapy
Advanced package adds
- A second physiotherapy session every day
- Robotic gait training (RAGT)
- High-intensity electromagnetic therapy (HIEMT) and pelvic-floor magnetic therapy
- Cryotherapy
- Balance assessment and training
- Occupational therapy
Charged separately, when clinically needed
- Speech and swallow therapy (per session)
- Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) and rTMS (per session)
- ICU/HDU care, ICU doctors, ventilator and oxygen support, cardiac monitor, infusion and DVT pumps
- Medicines, consumables, laboratory tests and imaging
- Specialist consultations and attender meals
Every separately charged item is listed on the sheet you sign before admission, so it is never a surprise at discharge. An advance payment and a refundable security deposit apply at admission. Our admissions team verifies insurance coverage and helps with pre-authorisation. For how to compare any centre's quote, read our guide to rehabilitation costs.
How Admission Works
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you admit patients with a tracheostomy?
Yes. SENSE Health admits patients with a tracheostomy for rehabilitation and step-down care. A dedicated respiratory therapist is available 24/7 to look after the tracheostomy, alongside our on-site doctors, the 24/7 emergency response team and round-the-clock nursing. Share the discharge summary and current breathing support details at the first call so the team can plan the admission.
Who looks after the tracheostomy at night?
A respiratory therapist is on duty 24 hours a day for tracheostomy and ventilator patients, so suctioning, humidification and tube care continue through the night, not only during the day shift. If breathing changes, the on-site doctor responds, with Cloudphysician's intensivists available through tele-ICU. Respiratory therapy is included in both inpatient packages.
Can a patient who still needs a ventilator be admitted?
Yes. SENSE Health admits patients on ventilator support, including through a tracheostomy, and a dedicated respiratory therapist is available 24/7 for ventilator and tracheostomy patients. Ventilator, oxygen and ICU/HDU care are charged separately and are listed on the written package sheet before admission; respiratory therapy is included in the inpatient packages. The move from an acute ICU is planned with the treating team once they agree it is safe, so call us while your family member is still in hospital.
Can the tracheostomy tube be removed during rehabilitation?
Sometimes. Removing a tracheostomy (decannulation) depends on breathing, cough strength, secretions, swallowing and the original reason for the tube. The decision is made by doctors, step by step, never by a fixed timetable. At assessment we discuss what is realistic for your family member.
Will my family member be able to speak and eat with a tracheostomy?
Many people can work towards speaking and eating again, but it depends on their condition and the type of tube. Speech and swallow therapists assess voice and swallowing safety (charged per session), and chest physiotherapy, included in the inpatient packages, helps keep the airway clear.
